United Online has also taken the NetZero Voice product and bundled it with its new DSL broadband product being offered in conjunction with Verizon Internet Services. NetZero DSL customers will get 100 free minutes of outbound calling bundled with a 768K or 1. 5 Mbps DSL line.

The company isn’t putting all of its VoIP options into NetZero Voice. It also offers the PrivatePhone service with a free phone number and voice mail for a different segment of the consumer IP phone community. “With PrivatePhone, we’re targeting people with active social lives,” Newton states. “It’s more about using voice over IP as a lifestyle enhancement. Right now, it’s a fairly simple product set, but we’ll be looking to enhance it over time.”

PrivatePhone CDs can also be found at Best Buy, but Newton likes the fact that someone can call into a phone number and sign up for the entire product through their cell phone. “It’s the first VoIP product that I’m aware of that you could get without having to get near a computer or an Internet connection,” says Newton.

Earthlink ( www.earthlink.com) also offers a softphone solution, but distributes it solely through the company’s Mindspring ( www.mindspring.com) Web site. The company has successfully put its TrueVoice product onto retail shelves, most often displacing AT&T’s CallVantage offering. Steve Howe, Earthlink’s Vice President of Voice, describes the service as a first-generation product akin to Vonage and CallVantage. “Frankly they’re all pretty similar,” Howe states. “We think ours is the best because we have the best service

and support. We’ve been offering service and support for over 10 years, while other players have only started recently. We do it for over five million customers every day.”
